The Songstress is Anita Baker's debut album, released in 1983 on Beverly Glen Music -- an independent Los Angeles label -- produced by Otis Smith and Patrick Moten, with string arrangements by Gene Page and horn arrangements by Jerry Hey. Recorded at Kendun Studios and mastered at Hitsville, Hollywood, it launched Baker's career before her major-label breakthrough with Rapture in 1986.
