Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem recorded Astrakan Café in June 1999 at the Monastery of St Gerold, Austria, released on ECM in 2000. The trio format -- Brahem joined by François Couturier on piano and Jean-Louis Matinier on accordion -- draws on maqam modes and Central Asian melodic forms. Track titles reference cities across the Silk Road and Middle East, from Grozny to Khotan.
