Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in March 1961 and originally released in 1967, The Witch Doctor captures Art Blakey's Messengers in a hard bop session with an Afro-Cuban tilt -- hear "Afrique" for the percussive depth Blakey brought to the format. This 1999 Blue Note remaster, produced for reissue by Michael Cuscuna, adds an alternate take of the title track not on the original LP.
