Unit Structures was recorded in May 1966 and released on Blue Note (BST 84237), produced by Alfred Lion. This is the 1973 United Artists-era reissue, identifiable by the blue label with the Big B logo. Taylor leads a six-piece unit through four extended free jazz compositions, including the 16-minute centrepiece "Unit Structure / As Of A Now / Section."
