Before Imagination broke through properly, 'In The Heat Of The Night' was the record that showed what they were capable of — a debut LP that arrived with real confidence, balancing electronic funk grooves with proper vocal arrangements. The Red Bus gatefold pressing catches them at the start, before the bigger production budgets, and there's a directness to the sound that suits the songs. The hype sticker is a nice period touch. Imagination's 'In The Heat Of The Night' on Red Bus Records is a strong example of early 80s British soul done right.
