Janice McClain came through the post-disco era with a voice that could handle both the slick production of the time and something rawer underneath it. Her self-titled LP on MCA gave her room to stretch across styles, and it holds up as a solid example of early 80s R&B before the genre got fully swallowed by drum machines. Janice McClain's self-titled album on MCA Records is a quiet gem of the era.
