João Gilberto's earliest recordings for Odeon Brazil, captured between 1958 and 1961, effectively established bossa nova as a genre. This 1990 World Pacific compilation -- reissued in Spain in 1997 as a press promo (not for retail sale) -- collects 19 tracks including "Chega De Saudade", "Desafinado", and "Bim Bom", all featuring Gilberto's signature fingerpicked guitar and close vocal style.
