Giant Steps is John Coltrane's breakthrough leader album, recorded in 1959 and released on Atlantic. This 2014 European reissue uses catalogue number SD 1311. The album introduced the "Coltrane changes" -- a rapid harmonic substitution pattern composers and players have worked with ever since. Naima, written for his wife, and the title track remain among the most studied pieces in post-bop.
