The Last Poets -- the New York spoken word collective whose 1970 debut predated hip-hop -- released Understand What Black Is in 2018 on London's Studio Rockers label. Produced with a reggae and soul backbone, it features original member Umar Bin Hassan alongside newer collaborators. "How Many Bullets" and "Rain Of Terror" address police violence and war directly, continuing the group's politically direct style.
