Van Twist were a Belgian-Congolese duo formed in Brussels in the early 1980s. "Shaft" was released in 1985 on Polydor as a standalone 12" single, reaching the UK charts. The track is a synth-pop reworking of Isaac Hayes' 1971 blaxploitation theme, driven by programmed drums and layered electronics. The B-side features "Hot Wax" alongside the 7" edit.
