Willie "The Lion" Smith was a pioneering Harlem stride pianist, a direct influence on Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. This 1959 UK Top Rank EP pairs two cornerstones: Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag and W.C. Handy's St. Louis Blues. Pressed by Rank Records Ltd in London, licensing from the US Grand Award label, it captures Smith in his element -- solo piano rooted in the ragtime and stride tradition he helped define.
